Dear Parents and Caregivers of Sixth Graders,
Transitioning to middle school is an exciting time for your young student(s). But, new activities, new friends, new teachers, and a new building can also cause anxiety. You and your children likely have questions. Each year Lamoille Union Middle School (LUMS) hosts various opportunities for your family to learn about the middle school and make that transition easier. These opportunities include step-up days for the 6th-grade classes, alumni visits to the elementary schools, parent and teacher informational forms, and informational meetings and tours at the middle school.
The informational meetings will include opportunities to ask questions, speak with some teachers, and take a tour of the school.
Informational meetings and tour opportunities are:
- April 20, 2023 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
- May 4, 2023 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
- May 9, 2023 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
- May 16, 2023 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
An important step in the process is the collection of student information that will help us place students on teams. Lamoille Union Middle School sixth-grade teachers fill out informational sheets. School representatives also meet to share information on student strengths and needs. Though each of our teams is unique, as each teacher brings a different flavor to the team, they all address the same set of academic proficiencies.
Each team will offer students a wonderful set of experiences to enrich their middle school experience as well as prepare them for high school. Middle school is an important time during which students learn many skills around independence and self-confidence. It is an exciting time for students.
We would greatly appreciate your efforts in completing the LAMOILLE UNION MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION FORM. We encourage you to provide us with your thoughts and concerns, hopes, and dreams for your child on the input form so that we have your voice as part of the planning process. It is important to share as much information as possible so that we can create balanced and equitable teams across the school.
Once decisions are made for team placement, and your child is notified, we ask that you do not request any changes, as this impacts the hard work that went into creating balanced teams. We certainly understand that it can be a stressful time if students aren’t on the same team as some of their friends, but we want to reassure you that teams work hard to help students form new friends and continue to build the Lancer community.
We have also included the STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE FOR INCOMING 7TH GRADERS for you and your student to complete together. It is very important these forms are returned to Juli Morin, Middle-Level Registrar, by the end of April at the latest. You can return this form to your child’s 6th-grade teacher or mail them directly to the LUMS office.
LUMS leadership, teachers, and staff look forward to an active partnership with parents so your child has the opportunity to receive the most meaningful middle school experience possible.
